San Francisco isn’t too small forthe amount of economic activity that goes on here—it’s just cozy! Okay, that’sa bad joke, but as the City by The Bay transforms the nation and continues todisrupt previous economic models, it seems like we need to disrupt the way thatspace is used and allocated here too. A lot of people are moving to SanFrancisco to take advantage of the red-hot economy, but there aren’t enoughoffices and single-family homes for all of them. Just take one look at the realestate pages to prove it.
So it’s understandable that more andmore organizations are working smarter, not harder, to find collaborative co-workingspaces to house innovation. I mean, who needs an office anyway when you’ve gota brain trust? But AV Structural INC has noticed one thing about the mostsuccessful recent trend in office planning, especially for co-working spaces:as much as the open-office plan in Silicon Valley has transformed the waypeople work, the most successful of co-working places all have one thing incommon. It’s a huddle room.
A Huddle Room? What Does That Have To Do With My San Francisco Workplace?
A huddle room is a small room—think‘side office’ and not ‘corner suite’—in an open-concept co-working space thatallows smaller groups to break off and meet in a spot that affords them someprivacy. But what’s most essential for any huddle room is the technology in it.From smart boards to life-size video conferencing systems, your AV technologycan make or break your business.
Unlike the break room, the huddleroom can skip the frills. Ping pong? No way. These are multi-purpose spaces forworking (and, okay, maybe napping too sometimes) designed to bringpeople together in the service of a common goal. And your AV technologyneeds to reflect that fact. Combine low-tech and no-frills design (tables, chairs) with high-tech solutions and you can suddenly make big changes from atiny space.
Without that video conferencingequipment, your huddle room becomes a fancy storage closet. You need a systemthat lets you talk to investors and colleagues away on business from the samespace. You need projectors and multimedia equipment for presentations andreal-time integration of your products. And you need to be sure it all works, most of all.
The best huddle room designsintegrate in-house video conferencing with ‘plug-and-play’ solutions that letteam members and co-workers seamlessly integrate their own devices with yourtechnology. To do that, you need a savvy AV technology company to design you asystem that is sophisticated and has power, but is also simple and intuitive touse.
If your open office or co-working space could benefit from a few huddle rooms, give AV Structural INC a call. We’ve been the Bay Area’s most reliable AV and video conferencing equipment company since 2008. From installation to service to sales, we do it all. Call us today to learn more!

The Grand Hyatt Hotel, located in the heart of San Francisco’s Union Square, needed to replace an existing video wall that had been temperamental for nearly two years. The challenge? Budget (of course), and the 3×8 array of screens was mounted 20 feet above the lobby floor – and installation of the new video wall needed to happen during the holiday shopping season to reach completion by the December 24 deadline.
AV Structural was awarded the project, and quickly went to work constructing a 20-foot-high, 34-foot-long scaffolding apparatus that enabled the team to work virtually around the clock, while maintaining safety for their crew and for the guests walking beneath the scaffolding at all hours of the day and night. The new video wall also required a unique installation to provide easy access to the displays for periodic maintenance and eventual replacement.
AV Structural overcame the mechanical challenges of the installation and proposed traditional AV components including a video wall processor and several video distribution amplifiers plus HDBaseT extenders. On paper this design would have sufficed, however the solution exceeded the allocated budget by several thousand dollars – this is where BrightSign came into play.
A second proposal using 24 XD1132 players with BrightSign’s BrightWall™ and BrightAuthor software allowed AV Structural to create a high-definition, 1080p-resolution-per-display video wall, all controlled by a single Apple iPad Air 2. The project was delivered on time and on budget. With the XD1132 units wall-mounted directly under the video wall and hidden behind a matching wood veneer under the stairs, the entire system is conveniently maintained from this easily accessible equipment area versus dealing with individual components high above the floor, or mounted behind the displays. The system includes high redundant power, remote system monitoring, and a dual-network switch to reduce downtime. Using features of BrightWall™ and BrightScript™, the video wall’s functionality rivals that of a traditional video wall processor at a fraction of the cost. And the Apple iPad Air 2 interface provides a very user-friendly method of control for IT and other facility staff.

Booking a room from the touchpanel is as easy as tapping the “Reserve” button. The intuitive interface provides at-a-glance room availability and a timeline view of the room’s status for the rest of the day. Depending how they are set up, Extron TLP Pro 520M, 720M, and 720T TouchLink Pro Touchpanels can be configured and used as either traditional touchscreen controllers or as full-featured room booking appliances. Once the touchpanels are set up with Room Agent, they seamlessly tie to a Microsoft Exchange server, Office 365, and Google Calendar without complicated setup or programming. Simply connect the touchpanel to your computer, open the free Room Agent software, fill in the required fields that compose the user interface, and you’re done. The California Department Of Public Health (CDPH), based out of Richmond California, went searching for an audiovisual contractor to replace their campus-wide aging analog based AV equipment. AV Structural was up against several other audiovisual heavyweight AV integrators in the rigorous bidding process and came out victorious. Here is what they had to say after the project was successfully completed:
“We were quite pleased to learn that AV Structural was awarded the recent Audio-Visual System Replacement Project for the California Department of Public Health here in Richmond, CA. This upgrade has been in the works for over seven years (the original system was put in place as part of the construction of the facility 17 years ago), so we were anxious to have a very skilled and respected local audiovisual contractor design, provide and integrate so many disparate AV systems throughout our Campus, including fully integrated audio conference & videoconference AV & Control systems, matrixed video walls, and a 200-seat Multipurpose auditorium, complete with a 20,000 ANSI lumen projector, four remote controlled camera zones for dynamic videoconferencing and live streaming, and a Dolby Atmos surround sound system for truly immersive audio for audio playback presentations. AV Structural’s extensive knowledge of state of the art audio-visual systems and attention to the most minute details throughout the entire project was not unnoticed and was quite impressive. We are extremely pleased with the successful systems AV Structural handed off to us after several user-friendly training sessions.”

2×6 Video Wall Array, Hotel Lobby, SF, CA
Not too longago, in technology years, video walls were sort of a rare sighting. You’doccasionally see a modestly sized one in a bank reception area, hotel lobby or sportsbar. Now it seems they are everywhere. One of the key reasons to this speedy proliferation is the changing role of andaffordability of video wall processors.
The quick& easy explanation is any kind of processing that was required in the pastto create a single, large, uniform image or multiple images meant big bucksthat for most was just out of reach. Now, most video wall display manufacturershave included in their operations menu simple step by step instructions thatallow for the creation of a spectacularly stunning video wall. The limitationbeing that the video wall would need to be in any linear configuration such as2×2, 3×3, 4×4, 5×5, lest the image will appear squelched, stretched and/orgreatly out of proportion. Fortunately, many end users are more than happy to end up with a larger than life video wallwith a single image—especially since most displays being shipped have thinnerframes (called bezels) that allow for the illusion of a single image. For themore discerning client who require the option of displaying multiple imagessimultaneously, or in a non-linear way such as a 2×5, 5×10 to name just a fewexamples, a more sophisticated outboard processor is necessary. This typicallyends up costing several thousands of dollars more but does provide virtuallyendless dynamic display opportunities. AV Structural has installed hundreds of displays and have seasoned techniciansand project engineers who will work with you to come up with the appropriatedesign for your special application.
